Late Surge Lifts UCO Past Rangers

ALVA, Okla. (March 9) -- Isaac Hellbusch's eighth-inning grand slam snapped a scoreless tie and propelled Central Oklahoma to an 8-1 victory over intrastate rival Northwestern Oklahoma here Wednesday.

Hellbusch's late blast made it 4-0 and the Rangers got on the board in the bottom of that frame with their only run of the game before the Bronchos put it away with another four-run volley in the top of the ninth.

UCO improved to 10-5 on the season and returns to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Friday -- weather permitting -- with the start of a three-game home series against Central Missouri.

"We didn't do much offensively until the last couple of innings and then came through with some quality at bats," head coach John Martin said.  "I thought we did a good on the mound and we came out with a good road win."

Five pitchers combined to limit NWOSU to just five hits and one run, with Zack Wunderlich earning the win.  Starter Austin Stewart had the longest stint on the mound as he gave up three hits while striking out four in four innings of work.

Hellbusch, Jacob Borrego and Jake Dyer had two hits apiece to pace a 10-hit attack and the Bronchos also stole 11 bases in the game.

Dyer and Borrego started UCO's eighth-inning outburst with back-to-back singles before advancing on a double steal and then Jon Kamies drew a walk to load the bases for Hellbusch, who promptly belted his third home run of the season over the right field wall to make it 4-0.

The Rangers got their lone run in the bottom of the eighth, but Borrego, Hellbusch and Landon Eason had run-scoring singles and T.J. Sparr an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth to put the game away.
