Bronchos Fall at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. (March 4) – Central Oklahoma bashed four home runs and overcame a four-run deficit with a late rally only to see Fort Hays State score a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand the Bronchos a 10-9 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Friday.

UCO had a five-game winning streak snapped with its first league loss of the season, falling to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference.  The teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday before ending the three-game series at 12 p.m. Sunday.

The Bronchos trailed 9-5 entering the eighth inning, but got close on Brenton Washausen's three-run homer and then pulled even in the ninth on Landon Eason's RBI triple.

FHSU used two walks and a single to load the bases with one out in its final at bat before getting the win on a sacrifice fly.

"We fought hard and just came up a little short today," head coach John Martin said.  "Offensively we did a lot of good things and I like the way we're competing until the last out."

Jon Kamies went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead UCO's 12-hit attack, while Eason and T.J. Sparr had two hits each.

The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with UCO getting two runs back in the second on back-to-back solo homers by Isaac Hellbusch and Kamies.

The Bronchos went ahead 5-3 in the fifth as Eason ripped a two-run homer to center field and Jacob Borrego added an RBI fielder's choice, but FHSU scored five runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to surge in front 9-5.
