Defense, Leiker Lead UCO

EDMOND (March 18) – Flawless defense and a strong pitching performance by Daulton Leiker carried Central Oklahoma to a 5-1 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph over Lindenwood Friday afternoon at chilly Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos didn't make an error and got several stellar defensive plays from the infield throughout in winning for the third straight time, improving to 14-7 on the season and 6-4 in league play.

Leiker scattered seven hits in 6 2/3 innings while walking just one and striking out six in improving to 2-0. Ryan McCourt went 1 1/3 innings and Shawn Troutman pitched the final frame to close out the win.

"When you play good defense and get solid pitching you're going to have a chance to win every time you take the field and we did that today," head coach John Martin said.  "I thought our guys were really focused despite some tough conditions and we started the series on a good note."

The two teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday before finishing the three-game series at noon Sunday.

UCO turned two double plays in the game, with second baseman Jake Dyer starting an inning-ending twin killing in the sixth on a tough play to his right and shortstop Jacob Borrego making a sensational stop up the middle to ignite another in the seventh.

Brenton Washauser made two fine plays at third base and first baseman Jon Kamies got a big out in the eighth when he bare-handed a bunt attempt and stepped on the bag to barely beat out the runner.

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in their first at bat of the game when Borrego drew a one-out walk and scored on Landon Eason's double to left field.

The Lions tied it in the third and UCO broke the deadlock in the fourth.  Kamies and T.J. Sparr had consecutive two-out singles before Washausen and Korey Floyd drew back-to-back walks to force in the tie-breaking run.

Kamies added a run-scoring single up the middle in the fifth to make it 3-1 and the Bronchos added two insurance runs in the eighth.  Floyd had an RBI fielder's choice in that frame and later scored on a wild pitch.

Eason went 3-for-4 and Kames had two hits to lead a nine-hit attack.
