EDMOND (Feb. 9) – Jacob Borrego and T.J. Sparr delivered back-to-back two-run doubles in a big sixth inning uprising that propelled Central Oklahoma to a season-opening 9-7 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon at wind-blown Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos trailed 5-2 before erupting for six runs in the sixth to take the lead and then scored once in the eighth to go up 9-5 en route to handing head coach John Martin the win in his UCO debut.

"It was a little sloppy, but we found a way to get it done," said Martin, who took over the reigns last summer after four years as head coach at Coffeyville Community College.  "We made some mistakes to get ourselves in a hole, but our guys kept fighting and we made some things happen."

The Bronchos committed five errors in the first five innings, with three of those coming in the fifth when SWOSU scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead.

It was the same score entering the sixth when UCO took charge, getting the first run on a bases-loaded walk to Hunter Schellhardt before Borrego tied it up with his two-run double through the left side.

Sparr followed with a shot to right-center field that plated two more runs to put the Bronchos ahead and Landon Eason made it 8-5 with an RBI single.

UCO added an insurance run in the eighth on Borrego's sacrifice fly and the 9-5 lead was enough to hold off a last-ditch Bulldog rally in the top of the ninth.

Borrego went 2-for-4 with four RBI to highlight a nine-hit attack, with Eason also collecting two hits.

Daulton Leiker started and went the first 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and allowing five unearned runs due to UCO's early fielding woes.  Jaycee Parke ended up getting the pitching win with 1 1/3 innings of relief help.

The Bronchos travel to Magnolia, Ark. for three games at the Southern Arkansas Festival this weekend before returning home next Tuesday to host Southern Nazarene at 1 p.m.
