Kamies Comes Through

EDMOND (Feb. 26) – Jon Kamies followed a clutch ninth-inning home run with an even more dramatic shot in the 10th to propel Central Oklahoma to a wild 22-20 victory over Southwest Baptist Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

Kamies belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 18-all and then – after the Bearcats scored twice in the top of the 10th to go up 20-18 – smashed a two-out, three-run dinger in the bottom of that frame for the game-winner.

"That was a crazy game," head coach John Martin said.  "There were a lot of big momentum shifts and it just kept going back-and-forth.  I'm really proud of our guys for hanging in there and fighting until the last out.  That's what we've been preaching and it paid off today."

It was the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener for both teams and it was a slugfest from the start with the wind blowing out.

Each team used five pitchers, who threw a combined 452 pitches and issued 21 walks.  There were eight errors and 34 hits – including nine homers – and the lead changed hands seven times.

UCO erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to grab a 14-10 lead, but the Bearcats went back in front with a five-run volley in the sixth before the Bronchos scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to go up 16-15.

SBU then scored three times in the eight to take an 18-16 lead and that was the score going into the bottom of the ninth.

Isaac Hellbusch was hit by pitch leading off the ninth and Kamies followed with his first homer of the season, a no-doubt drive over the left field wall on the first pitch he saw to make it 18-18.

The Bearcats came back with two runs in the top of the 10th to regain the lead and again UCO responded to the challenge.

Chris Lobato led off with a single to right field and went to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a groundout and scoring on Landon Eason's single through the right side.

Hellbusch kept the two-out rally alive with a single to right field and Kamies came through with his second straight first-pitch homer, this one another towering drive to left field that set off a wild celebration at home plate.

Kamies went 3-for-6 with seven runs batted in to lead UCO's 18-hit attack.  Eason and Brenton Washausen also had three hits, while Hellbusch, Korey Floyd and Jacob Borrego had two hits apiece.

The Bronchos, now 4-3 on the season, continue the three-game series with SBU at 1 p.m. Saturday.
