Lions Stop UCO Winning Streak

EDMOND (Jan. 30) – Central Oklahoma had a tough time against the best defensive team in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and dropped a 69-60 decision to Lindenwood Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos struggled throughout against a Lion squad featuring a front line that went 6-foot-7, 6-foot-9 and 7-foot-1 and shot a season-low 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the field in having a three-game winning streak snapped.

UCO had 11 shots blocked when it tried to go inside and made just 2-of-14 attempts from 3-point range in falling to 11-10 on the season and 7-8 in the league.  The Lions improved to 15-6 and 11-4.

"Lindenwood has a really good defensive team and we just couldn't get anything going," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "We played hard and did a good job on the boards, but they really took us out of our offense."

Trai Jordan had 11 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and five steals to lead the Bronchos, who ended up outrebounding LU 40-33.  Cornell Neal scored a team-high 16 points with four assists.

UCO also got 11 points and seven rebounds from Garen Wright and 10 points from Jarred Bairstow.

Four different players scored as the Bronchos jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but LU came back to tie it at 11 and was up 25-18 before UCO ended with a 9-2 run to pull even by intermission.

Neal and Jordan made two free throws apiece to start that surge and Wright ended it with a last-minute layup that made it 27-all at the break.

The Bronchos couldn't maintain the momentum and missed their first 10 field goal attempts of the season half as Lindenwood grabbed a 39-28 lead with 14:18 left to play.

UCO managed to get within four at 47-43 on a Neal bomb from the top of the key at the 7:49 mark, but the Lions was a perfect 10-of-10 from the foul line the rest of the way to keep the Bronchos at bay.

Central is off until next Saturday when it hosts intrastate rival Northeastern State for a 3:30 p.m. league contest.
