Bronchos Hold Off NSU

EDMOND (Feb. 6) – Seth Heckart drained two pressure-packed free throws with 14 seconds left to seal the deal as Central Oklahoma staved off hard-charging Northeastern State 70-66 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos never trailed, led by 14 points at halftime and were up 16 in the second half before holding on down the stretch for their seventh win in nine outings.

UCO improved to 12-10 on the season and 8-8 in the league while dropping the RiverHawks to 6-14 and 5-11.

"It was a tough game and we found a way to hang on," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "We made a lot of mistakes, especially in the second half, but we showed some resiliency at the end."

Trai Jordan and Corey Alpough had 11 points apiece to lead a balanced attack, with Alpough adding nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

Cornell Neal, Jordan London and Kendahl Amerson added nine points each, while Heckart finished with seven points, four assists and two steals.

The Bronchos led 35-21 at halftime and were up 16 (52-36) eight minutes into the second half after an Amerson three-point play.

NSU started chipping away at the lead and got within two at 62-60 with a 3-pointer at the 1:29 mark.  An Alpough layup and two Jared Bairstow free throws made it 66-60 with 46 seconds left, but the RiverHawks scored four straight to again make it a two-point game (66-64) at 0:37.

Garen Wright hit two foul shots at 0:35 to push the lead back to four before the RiverHawks made at layup at 0:15 to again get close at 68-66.

NSU couldn't come up with a steal and fouled Heckart at 0:14, with the senior veteran calmly canning both foul shots to finally clinch the win.

The Bronchos never trailed after Bairstow hit a 3-pointer from the win 13 seconds into the game and UCO's lead peaked at 17 (34-17) with 2:01 left when Heckart splashed through the 200th trey of his career.

Central continues a seven-game homestand Thursday against Northwest Missouri.
