UCO Topples Lady Bison

SHAWNEE, Okla. (Sept. 8) – Barbara Jackson and Taylor Bevis combined for 31 kills as Central Oklahoma subdued intrastate rival Oklahoma Baptist in four sets Tuesday night at Noble Complex to remain unbeaten.

The Bronchos improved to 5-0 with the 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-12 victory in their first meeting with OBU since 1987.  The match was close throughout the first three sets before UCO dominated the fourth.

"We played pretty well at times and beat a good team," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "I'm never really satisfied, but we did some good things and continue to make progress."

Jackson led the Bronchos with 17 kills, 15 digs and four service aces, while Bevis hit a sizzling .591 with 14 kills and just one error in 22 attacks.

UCO also got 10 kills and three blocks from Allison Barr, with Jordan Spence and Bonnie Vernon adding five kills each.  Katy Davis had a season-high 47 assists and Whitney Gifford contributed 16 digs.

The Bronchos got two kills apiece from Barr, Bevis and Jackson in jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead in the opening set, but OBU used three straight service aces to rally and tie it at 11-all.

UCO regained the lead for good at 13-12 on a service error and went on to claim the win.  Jackson earned three points with hard-hit smashes and Barr had an acrobatic tip kill at the net to spark the Bronchos down the stretch.

The Lady Bison surged in front 5-1 to start the second set and led by as many as seven points, the final time at 17-10.

UCO chipped away at the deficit and got within 19-18 after two Spence kills and a combined block by Spence and Davis.  The Bronchos finally drew even at 21 on an attack error, went ahead 22-21 on Barr's kill down the middle and completed the comeback with kills by Jackson and Elizabeth Boyd and another OBU miscue.

Jackson had three kills and Bevis two to lead UCO to a 15-11 lead in the third set before the Lady Bison rebounded with a 10-3 run to move in front 21-18.

Barr had a hard kill down the middle and teamed with Bevis for a block as the Bronchos came back to tie it 22-22, but a service error, ball-handling miscue and attack error handed OBU the set.

UCO took control at the outset in the fourth set, getting two kills from Bevis and two Jackson aces in zipping to an 8-0 lead.  Another 8-0 spurt turned a 15-9 lead into a 23-9 advantage and Barr had the final two kills to close out the match.

The Bronchos return to action this weekend with a trip to Lakeland, Fla. for the rugged Florida Southern Classic, where UCO will play a pair of top-25 teams in the two-day, four-match event.
