Upset Special!

EDMOND (Sept. 25) – An amazing defensive display by Whitney Gifford fueled No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma to a four-set upset of sixth-rated Central Missouri Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The senior libero made a season-high 33 digs – many of the highlight variety against a hard-hitting UCM attack – and the Bronchos opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a 25-19, 26-24, 18-25, 25-16 victory over the defending league champions.

"We came out really focused and ready to play tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We did an excellent job defensively and beat a great team.  I'm really proud of how the team performed and we just need to make sure we don't have a letdown tomorrow."

UCO, which improved to 12-1 on the season with its sixth straight win, is back at home at 2 p.m. Saturday against league rival Lindenwood.  The Jennies had a six-match winning streak snapped in falling to 12-2.

Barbara Jackson and Taylor Bevis had 15 kills apiece to pace the offense, while Jordan Spence added seven kills and five total blocks.  Allison Barr and Elizabeth Boyd chipped in six kills each.

Setter Katy Davis put together another stellar all-around match with 44 assists, 11 digs, four kills and three assisted blocks.  Bonnie Vernon (12 digs) and Mikayla Bangasser (10) also played a big role defensively.

Bevis had five kills in the opening set as the Bronchos jumped out to the early lead.  Spence's spike down the line broke a 12-12 tie to put UCO in front to stay.

The Bronchos built a 10-5 lead in the second set only to see UCM rally to tie it at 16 and it was deadlocked again at 17, 18, 19, 20, 23 and 24 before UCO scored the final two points on a kill by Jackson and combined block by Davis and Barr.

The Jennies stayed alive with the 25-18 third-set win as UCO committed seven hitting errors and then built a 7-3 lead early in the fourth set in an attempt to tie the match.

The Bronchos rallied to tie it at 9-all, took the lead for good at 11-10 on a UCM attack error and pulled away from there en route to ending the match as Gifford had 10 of her 33 digs.
