Bronchos Tie With Missouri Western

EDMOND (Sept. 25) – Quinn Tookey spearheaded a staunch defensive effort down the stretch as Central Oklahoma was forced to settle for a 1-1 tie with Missouri Western Friday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos dominated most of the first 60 minutes, but were unable to take advantage of several prime chances to break the deadlock and then had to hold on.

UCO gave up just 10 shots in the game, though Tookey's defensive brilliance often prevented the Griffons from even getting off an attempt after they had worked their way into scoring range.

It was the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener for both teams, with the Bronchos moving to 3-3-1 on the season and MWSU 4-1-1.

"We had some great opportunities to score in the first half and early in the second and couldn't convert," head coach Mike Cook said.  "We did a good job defensively and are making progress, especially with such a young team."

UCO, which started eight freshmen in the game,  fell behind 1-0 just 10 minutes into the contest on a long shot over the head of goalkeeper Elle Stover.

Kentia Kokis had a couple of good scoring chances that didn't pay off in the next 15 minutes before Katie Killion finally got the Bronchos on the scoreboard in the 37th  minute.

The speedy rookie took a pass from Falyn Dodd and easily booted in a shot from close range for her third goal of the season to make it 1-1.

Killion had three chances to break the deadlock during a 10-minute span of the second half, but MWSU made the save on each shot.

Stover had two saves for the Bronchos, including a diving stop off a free kick late in regulation.

Camrie Hurst and Ashley Snider also played a key role defensively for UCO.

The Bronchos are back in action Sunday, hosting league foe Northwest Missouri at 1 p.m.
