Home Sweet Home

EDMOND (Sept. 18) – A pair of freshmen sparked a fourth-set surge that enabled No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma to turn back stubborn Northwestern Oklahoma Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

Jordan Spence had four of her match-high nine blocks and Taylor Bevis six of her team-leading 12 kills in the fourth set as the Bronchos finished off a 25-19, 25-16, 17-25, 25-16 victory over the Rangers.

UCO opened the day with an easy three-set cruise past Southeastern Oklahoma, hitting a blistering .473 in a 25-9, 25-14, 25-11 romp.

It was the first two home matches of the season for the Bronchos, who improved to 10-1.  UCO is home again Saturday to face Southwestern Oklahoma at 7 p.m.

"We played well for stretches in both matches and it was good to finally play at home," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Some of our younger players gave us a big boost when we needed it in the second match."

NWOSU had an 8-7 lead in the fourth set when Spence came through with three blocks and Bevis a kill in a 4-0 run that put the Bronchos on top to stay at 11-8 and UCO stayed safely ahead the rest of the way.

Bevis' 12 kills led the Bronchos, while Barbara Jackson added 11.  Spence hit .368 with eight kills and just one error in 19 attacks in addition to her nine assisted blocks.

Katy Davis contributed 38 assists, 11 digs and five assisted blocks, with Whitney Gifford adding 22 digs.

UCO never trailed in winning the first set of the match and used an early 5-0 scoring spurt to take control in the second before the Rangers rebounded in claiming the third set.

The Bronchos started the day on fire against SOSU, hitting an astounding .567 in the opening set with 17 kills and no errors in 30 attacks, and hardly let up the rest of the way in scoring their seventh sweep of the season.

Bevis had a match-high 11 kills with a .400 attack percentage, while Spencer hit .529 with 10 kills.  Allison Barr and Deborah Ijeoma Njenje had nine kills apiece in hitting a combined .548.

UCO also got 44 assists from Davis, 16 digs from Gifford and three service aces from Baleigh Murphy.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 10-3 lead en route to the opening-set rout and broke away from a 13-13 tie in the second set with a closing 12-1 run as Spencer had five kills.

UCO seized command early again in the third set behind two early Barr kills and coasted in.
