UCO Blanks RiverHawks

EDMOND (Sept. 17) – Stout defense stymied Northeastern State's high-scoring attack and carried Central Oklahoma to a tense 1-0 shutout of the RiverHawks Thursday afternoon at wind-blown Tom Thompson Field.

NSU entered the contest unbeaten and untested, having outscored its first four foes a combined 19-0, but the Bronchos were up to the task in earning their second straight win and improving to 3-2.

Freshman Kentia Kokis scored the game's only goal in the 51st minute and UCO's defense did the rest, keeping the RiverHawks at bay the final 39 minutes to secure the victory.

"Our defense did a great job today and we came out with a really good win," head coach Mike Cook said.  "It was hot and windy, but we played with a lot of effort and I was really proud of the way the team battled today."

Freshman Lexie Bates went the distance between the posts for the first time and had seven saves for the Bronchos, with Camrie Hurst, Quinn Tookey, Kenzie Sublett, Courtney Essary and Courtney Cox all providing staunch defense in the shutout.

UCO's Morgan Cherry had the best scoring chance for either team in the first half, but NSU made the save on her hard shot from close range in the 31st minute.

Kokis broke the scoreless deadlock with her fourth goal of the young season at the 50:44 mark, taking a nifty pass from Kimberly Linder and burying a shot from the top of the box.

Defense made that score hold up as the Bronchos improved to 17-2-1 in the series with their intrastate rival.

UCO returns to action Saturday, traveling to Bolivar, Mo. to take on Southwest Baptist at 12 p.m.  The Bronchos are back home next Friday to host Missouri Western at 4 p.m.
