Bronchos Roll

LAKELAND, Fla. (Sept. 12) – Allison Barr led Central Oklahoma to a stunning sweep of No. 24-ranked West Texas A&M and the Bronchos rolled to two easy wins on the final day of the Florida Southern Classic here Saturday.

Barr hit .550 with 12 kills and just one error in 20 attacks as UCO rolled over the Lady Buffs 25-13, 25-17, 25-19 in the morning before overwhelming Merrimack 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 in its final match of the two-day event.

The Bronchos finished 3-1 in the tournament, losing in four sets to host and No. 11 Florida Southern.  UCO, now 8-1, make its home debut next Friday with matches against intrastate rivals Southeastern Oklahoma and Northwestern Oklahoma.

"We played well and had a great weekend," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Beating West Texas was a really big step for us and we just need to keep working hard to get better."

The Bronchos hit .317 as a team and got plenty of contributions in ending a six-match losing streak to WTAMU.

Jordan Spencer had nine kills and three blocks, Barbara Jackson eight kills and four blocks and Elizabeth Boyd five kills, while Whitney Gifford made 24 digs and Katy Davis had 31 assists.

UCO trailed 3-1 early in the first set before Barr had two kills in a 6-0 run to take control and the Bronchos never trailed in the second set.

The Lady Buffs jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third set, but UCO rallied to pull even at 10-all.  It went back-and-forth from there and WTAMU went ahead 19-17 before the Bronchos scored eight straight points to end the match.

Barr and Jackson had two kills apiece in that set-deciding spurt, with Gifford's service ace ending the match.

UCO had no trouble against Merrimack and ended up hitting an amazing .456 as a team with 37 kills and only six errors in 68 attacks.

Taylor Bevis hit .588 with 11 kills and one miscue in 17 attacks and Spence hit .750 with six kills and no errors in eight attempts.
