UCO Rolls Past Crimson Storm

EDMOND (April 7) – Jessi Walker tossed a two-hit shutout and Central Oklahoma continued its offensive rampage with a 29-run attack in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Southern Nazarene here Tuesday.

The Bronchos scored the second-most runs in school history in a 21-5 first-game romp after overcoming an early two-run deficit and cruised to an 8-0 rout in the nightcap behind Walker's pitching gem.

UCO has scored 82 runs in winning its last seven games.  The Bronchos, riding a 13-game home winning streak, improved to 29-12 on the season.

"We're doing a lot of good things at the plate right now and just want to keep it up," head coach Cody White said.  "Everybody is kind of feeding off each other with the way the whole team is hitting and we have a lot of confidence in our offense."

UCO needed just 12 hits to score 21 runs – second in school history behind a 23-run game against Southwestern Oklahoma in 1983 -- in the opener, taking advantage of six walks, five hit batsmen and two big errors in a blowout that ended after five innings.

Morgan Heard's two-run home run gave the Bronchos a quick 3-0 first inning lead in that contest, but a four-run error helped SNU come back to grab a 5-3 lead after the opening frame.

That didn't last long, as UCO scored nine times in the second with the benefit of just one hit.  Shelby Carel's inside-the-park three-run homer to right field was the lone hit, with two errors, two hit batters (both by Emily Ditmore), two walks and a wild pitch contributing to the rest of the carnage.

Ashton Smith's long two-run homer in the third pushed the lead to 14-5 and the Bronchos added seven more in the fourth as Devyn Frazier had a three-run triple down the right field line and Bre Davis a two-run double to left-center.

Kaylee Brunson went 3-for-4 with four runs to lead the offense, with Smith, Heard and Carel adding two hits apiece.  Nicole Brady earned the pitching win, giving up just two hits in four shutout innings of relief work.

Walker shut the Crimson Storm down in the nightcap, striking out five while giving up a pair of singles and walking five in a 106-pitch outing.

UCO scored the only runs in the needed in the first on Brooke Zukerman's line-drive two-run homer.  Carel added an RBI double in the second and Zukerman went deep again in the third, blasting a long bomb to center field to plate three runs in making it 6-0.

Smith's run-scoring double in the fourth upped the lead to 7-0 and the Bronchos ended the game early on the eight-run rule when Ashleigh Tramel ripped an RBI double to left-center.

Smith went 3-for-3 to pace an 11-hit attack, while Zukerman, Ditmore and Carel had two hits each.

UCO returns to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Friday, hosting Southwest Baptist for a 2 p.m. twinbill.
