UCO Tames Lions

JOPLIN, Mo. (April 25) – Nicole Brady and Jessi Walker threw back-to-back complete games and surging Central Oklahoma swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from Missouri Southern here Saturday afternoon.

Brady scattered six hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out six in an 8-0 first-game rout before Walker retired the final 16 batters to finish off a one-hitter in an 8-1 second-game triumph.

The Bronchos stretched their winning streak to seven straight with their third consecutive doubleheader sweep, improving to 39-14 overall and 18-6 in the league.  UCO wraps up the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. twinbill at Pittsburg State.

"Nicole and Jessi both pitched well today," head coach Cody White said.  "They did a great job of keeping the hitters off balance and we played good defense behind them.  We're playing well right now and just want to keep it going."

The Bronchos took advantage of MSSU errors to take a 2-0 lead after three innings of the opener before breaking the game open with a five-run volley in the sixth.

Ashton Smith had the big hit in that inning with a three-run single, while Emily Ditmore and Ally Dziadula added RBI hits as UCO stretched its lead to 8-0 and Brady finished the Lions off in their final at bat.

Ditmore had two hits and three RBI and Smith two hits to lead an eight-hit attack.

The Bronchos seized control early in the nightcap, erupting for six runs in the second inning.

Ashleigh Tramel started a two-out rally with a single before consecutive errors kept the inning alive and pushed across Tramel with the first run of the game.  Kaylee Brunson followed with a two-run double to right field, then RBI singles by Smith and Dziadula made it 6-0.

The Lions got their only run of the day in the bottom of the second, but UCO answered that in the third with Shelby Carel's two-run single to right field.

That 8-1 cushion was more than enough for Walker, who breezed through the final five innings.

UCO finished with nine hits, getting two each from Dziadula and Tramel.
