Gorillas Take Two From UCO

PITTSBURG, Kan. (April 26) – Pittsburg State put the clamps on Central Oklahoma's high-powered offense in sweeping a key Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from the Bronchos here Sunday.

UCO, averaging 6.7 runs and 9.5 hits a game entering the day, managed just five total runs and 10 hits in dropping 3-2 and 5-3 decisions to the Gorillas.  The Bronchos ended the regular season 39-16 overall and 18-8 in the league, finishing in a second-place tie with PSU.

"Pitt State did a great job keeping us off-balance at the plate and we never got our bats going," head coach Cody White said.  "We lost two tough games today, but just have to put it behind us and get ready for the conference tournament."

UCO is the No. 3 seed for the MIAA Tournament and will take on sixth-seeded Emporia State in the first round at 6 p.m. Thursday in Overland Park, Kan.  The eight-team, double-elimination tournament continues Friday and concludes with Saturday's finals.

The Bronchos nearly pulled out a fantastic comeback in the first game after entering the seventh inning down 2-0.  Kaylee Brunson reached on a one-out infield single and Ashton Smith was hit by pitch before Ally Dziadula's double to left-center scored both in tying the game 2-2.

But the Gorillas came right back, pulling out the 3-2 win with a two-out run-scoring single in their final at bat.

UCO took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap when Ashleigh Tramel led off the second inning with a double , went to third on an error and scored on Emily Ditmore's fielder's choice.  That became a 3-0 advantage in the third after Smith followed Brunson's lead-off double with a home run to center field.

Pitt State rallied again, tying the game with three unearned runs in the bottom of the third before taking a 5-3 lead in the fifth with a two-run homer, and the Bronchos couldn't answer back.
