UCO Takes The Sting Out of Hornets

EDMOND (April 19) – Hot-hitting Central Oklahoma flexed its offensive muscle in the final home games of the regular season Sunday, scoring 25 runs on 27 hits in a stunning doubleheader sweep of No. 17-ranked Emporia State.

Morgan Heard went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to spark the Bronchos to an 8-0 romp in the opener and Ally Dziadula smoked a pair of line-drive home runs in a six-RBI outing that fueled a 17-8 second-game rout.

UCO improved to 35-14 on the season and 16-6 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association with the sweep while dropping the Hornets to 31-15 and 13-7.

"We were aggressive at the plate and did a great job of staying focused today," said head coach Cody White, whose team leads the league with a .338 average.  "These were two big games for us and I was proud of the way we performed against a really good team."

The Bronchos had 10 hits in finishing off ESU after five innings in the first game, with Heard leading the way.

The freshman standout had a run-scoring infield single to give UCO a 1-0 first inning lead, belted a solo homer down the right field line in the third to make it 3-0 and contributed an RBI single during a five-run fifth inning that ended the game.

Heard also made two outstanding defensive plays in the field at her shortstop position, while third baseman Ashton Smith turned a double play in the top of the first to get UCO out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam.

Nicole Brady had a dominating outing in the pitching circle, giving up just four hits and walking two in earning her second shutout of the season.

The Bronchos banged out 17 hits in the second contest, getting three apiece from Smith, Brooke Zukerman and Rachel Harper while Dziadula and Kaylee Brunson had two each.

UCO snapped a 2-2 deadlock in the second inning of the nightcap in explosive fashion, parading 14 batters to the plate during a seven-run, nine-hit uprising.

Harper ripped an RBI triple to the right field corner early in the frame and added a run-scoring infield single late, while Smith, Brunson and Zukerman all had run-scoring doubles as UCO went ahead 10-2.

Emporia pulled within 11-6 in the top of the fourth, but Harper and Brunson had consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of that frame before Dziadula's line-drive shot over the right field fence made it 14-6.

The Hornets got two runs back in the fifth to cut the lead to 14-8 and extend the game.  Emily Ditmore sliced a solo homer to right in the fifth to push UCO's lead to 15-8 and Dziadula ended it in the sixth when she followed a one-out walk to Smith with her seventh dinger of the season.

Central travels to Wichita Falls, Texas for a non-conference doubleheader with Midwestern State before finishing the regular season next weekend with road twinbills at Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State.
