Brady Leads UCO To Two Wins

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (March 20) – Nicole Brady gave up just two hits in 9 2/3 innings work in the pitching circle to spark No. 16-ranked Central Oklahoma to a pair of opening-day wins in the Missouri Western Invitational here Friday.

The junior right-hander tossed a two-hit shutout in a tight 2-0 shutout of No. 14 Winona State before coming back to close out an 8-6 victory over Concordia-St. Paul with 2 2/3 innings of no-hit relief to earn her first career save.

The Bronchos are now 20-6, having won five straight and 12 of their last 13.  UCO returns Saturday to face Augustana at 10 a.m. and Upper Iowa at 2 p.m. before finishing the three-day event Sunday with a 3 p.m. contest against Wayne State.

"Nicole stayed ahead of the hitters and threw great in both games," head coach Cody White said.  "We came out ready to play and it was a good day for us."

Brady threw her sixth complete game of the season against WSU, giving up just the two hits and one walk while striking out three in improving to 8-2.

The Bronchos scored both their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and that was all the support Brady needed.

Brooke Zukerman led off the frame with a single and then stole second before coming home on Ashton Smith's one-out double, with Emily Ditmore's two-out single making it 2-0.

UCO finished with seven hits, getting two apiece from Zukerman and Kaylee Brunson.

The Bronchos broke on top early against Concordia, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brunson reached second on an error and stole third before scoring on Ditmore's groundout.

UCO made it 5-0 in the second with a four-run uprising as Brunson had a two-run triple, Shelby Carel an RBI single and Devyn Frazier a run-scoring groundout.

The Golden Bears got two runs back in the third, but UCO answered back with two of its own in the fourth.  Brunson ripped her second triple of the game to plate one run and Ally Dziadula added an RBI single to push the lead to 7-2.

CU made it close in the fifth, using three hits, two walks and a wild pitch to push across four runs in pulling within 7-6.

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the sixth when Dziadula led off with a double and later scored on Morgan Heard's sacrifice fly.

UCO had 11 hits in the contest, with Carel going 3-for-3 and Dziadula 3-for-4 while Brunson had two hits and three RBI.
