Bronchos Lose In Title Game

Dixie State Box
St. Mary's Box

TUCSON, Ariz. (Feb. 8) –
Central Oklahoma pulled out a 2-1 win with a last-inning rally and succumbed 10-9 to a late comeback on the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic here Sunday.

The Bronchos managed only one hit against No. 3-ranked Dixie State in Sunday's Gold Bracket semifinals, but Brooke Zukerman's two-run home run in the top of the seventh gave UCO the upset.

Central then built a 7-2 lead over No. 16-ranked St. Mary's only to see the Rattlers score eight sixth-inning runs in coming back to claim the win and earn the tournament title.

"Those were two crazy games," said head coach Cody White, whose team went 4-2 for the weekend.  "Brooke came up with a big hit and our defense came through in the first one and then we made some mistakes that cost us in the second.  But overall it was a good opening weekend for us."

The Bronchos managed only one base runner in the first six innings against Dixie State before Shelby Carel drew a lead-off walk in the top of the ninth.  Zukerman followed one out later with her first homer of the season to give UCO a 2-1 lead.

The Storm threatened in their final at bat, loading the bases with three straight singles to start the inning before Nicole Brady got out of the jam with two force outs at home plate and a fly out.

Brady went the distance to earn the pitching win, giving up nine hits.

St. Mary's took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the title game, but UCO tied it in the second on Emily Ditmore's two-run double and went ahead 7-2 with a five-run fifth as Morgan Heard had a two-run homer.

The Rattlers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to move in front 10-7 and then held off UCO in the top of the seventh.

Zukerman opened that inning with a double and scored on Heard's second homer of the contest.  The Bronchos put two more runners on as Ditmore singled and Tori Collet walked with two outs, but Kaylee Brunson's line-drive hit Collet going from first to second for the final out.

Heard and Zukerman were both named to the all-tournament team.

UCO doesn't play again until going to San Antonio, Texas Feb. 20-22 for the Rattler Invitational.
