Bronchos Split In St. Mary's Tourney

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 20) – No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma split a pair of games on the first day of the Rattler Invitational here Friday, beating Texas Woman's 6-3 in the opener before falling to host and fourth-rated St. Mary's 7-3.

The Bronchos, now 5-3 on the season, return Saturday to face Texas A&M International at 10 a.m. and Texas A&M-Commerce at 12 p.m. before finishing Sunday with games against Oklahoma Christian at 10 a.m. and Tarleton State at 12:30 p.m.

"We had some key hits in the first game and came out with a big win," second-year UCO head coach Cody White said.  "We gave St. Mary's too many extra at bats and they took advantage."

The Bronchos jumped out to 5-0 lead after three innings against TWU and then staved off a last-inning rally by the Pioneers in earning the first-game win.

Kaylee Brunson drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the first and stole second before Ally Dziadula's blast to left field gave UCO a 2-0 lead and Morgan Heard added a run-scoring double to make it 3-0.

That became a 5-0 cushion in the third when Heard singled and Tori Collet belted a two-out, two-run homer.

TWU – coached by Genny Stidham, who led the Bronchos to the 2013 national championship – got one run back in the fourth, but UCO answered that with Heard's solo homer in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.

The Pioneers pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded before a groundout ended the threat.

Heard went 3-for-3 to lead UCO's eight-hit attack, while Brunson and Collet had two hits apiece.  Nicole Brady went the distance in the pitching circle, giving up five hits and one earned run while striking out five.

UCO never led against the Rattlers, who used five walks and two hits to grab a 4-0 lead after three innings.

The Bronchos, who fell to SMU 10-9 in the finals of the NFCA Leadoff Classic two weeks ago, scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth to get back in the game.  Ashton Smith singled and Collet walked before Ashleigh Tramel cleared the bases with a shot over the left field fence.

But UCO went down in order the final three innings and the Rattlers put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth.
