Bronchos Open With Two Wins

Metro Box
Molloy Box

TUCSON, Ariz. (Feb. 6) –
Central Oklahoma opened up the 2015 season with a pair of wins at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic here Friday.

The Bronchos toppled Metropolitan State 7-4 in their first game in the three-day, 18-team tournament before edging Molloy 7-6 in the nightcap.

UCO finishes pool play at 10 a.m. (Oklahoma time) Saturday against Colorado State-Pueblo.  The tournament is then broken into two eight-team brackets, with opponents and game times to be decided for the final three games of the tournament.

"Those were two tough games, but we found a way to come out on top," head coach Cody White said.  "We had some good defensive stops in both games and came up with a bunch of clutch hits."

The Bronchos banged out nine hits in the win over Metro State, getting two apiece from Shelby Carel and Emily Ditmore.

Jessi Walker went the distance to pick up the pitching win in her UCO debut.  The sophomore right-hander tossed four scoreless innings after giving up a game-opening home run before the Roadrunners tacked on three sixth-inning runs.

The Bronchos took the lead for good at 2-1 in the second when Brooke Zukerman led off with a single, Morgan Heard followed with a double and Ditmore plated both with another double.

Devyn Frazier had a run-scoring single in the fourth as UCO pushed its lead to 4-1 and the Bronchos made it 7-1 in the fifth behind Ally Dziadula's two-run homer and Ashton Smith's RBI single.

The Bronchos got a solo homer from Ashleigh Tramel in the third inning and a three-run shot from Smith in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead against Molloy, but the Lions scored three in their half of the fourth to pull within 4-3.

UCO got run-scoring hits from Dziadula in the fifth, Tramel in the sixth and Morgan Heard in the top of the seventh to push the advantage to 7-3 and that was just enough to hold off Malloy, which capitalized on two errors and a three-run homer to make it close in its final at bat.

The Bronchos finished with nine hits, getting two each from Tramel and Smith.  Nicole Brady went the distance in the circle to earn the pitching win.
