UCO Takes Two

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 21) – Ashleigh Tramel's grand slam capped a sixth-inning rally that sparked Central Oklahoma past Texas A&M-Commerce and gave the Bronchos a sweep of two games at the Rattler Invitational here Saturday.

No. 13-ranked UCO trimmed Texas A&M International 4-3 in its first game before overcoming a 3-1 deficit behind Tramel's big hit in an 8-3 win over the Lions.

The Bronchos, now 7-3 on the season, take on Oklahoma Christian at 10 a.m. and Tarleton State at 12 p.m. Sunday to finish the three-day, six-game event.

"Neither game was real pretty, but we did what we needed to do," head coach Cody White said.  "We came up with some key hits in both games and Ashleigh obviously had the biggest one."

The Bronchos were down 3-1 to TAMUC going into the top of the sixth before Kaylee Brunson started the comeback with a lead-off bunt single.

She went to second on Devyn Frazier's sacrifice and scored when Ally Dziadula ripped a triple to right-center field to pull UCO within 3-2.  Brooke Zukerman was hit by pitch and Morgan Heard walked to load the bases before Tramel emptied them with her third homer of the season, this one a long fly to right field.

That made it 6-3 and the Bronchos added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Heard and Tramel had two-out singles before both scored on an error.

Ashton Smith led UCO's 10-hit attack with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Tramel had two hits.  Nicole Brady went the distance in the pitching circle to earn the win, scattering seven hits and striking out five in a 137-pitch outing.

The Bronchos built an early 4-0 lead in the first game against TAMUI before holding on at the end.

Heard's two-run single gave UCO a 2-0 lead in the first and that became 4-0 in the second on RBI hits by Emily Ditmore and Brunson.

The Dustdevils got on the scoreboard with one run in the third and then made it 4-3 with two more in the sixth, but reliever Kelsey Berlin put TAMUI down in order in the seventh to secure the win.

Ditmore, Brunson and Zukerman had two hits apiece for the Bronchos.  Jessi Walker pitched the first four innings to earn the win, while Berlin went the final three innings to pick up her first save.
