UCO Tames Lions

EDMOND (Nov. 6) – No. 15-ranked Central Oklahoma committed just eight hitting errors and had no trouble disposing of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe Missouri Southern Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos cruised past the Lions 25-16, 25-9, 25-15 for their 15th straight home win, finishing with 48 kills and eight miscues in 85 attacks for a robust .471 hitting percentage.

It was the 18th sweep of the season for UCO, which improved to 25-3 overall and 13-2 in staying tied for the league lead with No. 9 Washburn.

"We ran the offense well tonight and it showed," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We're a little banged up right now, so it was good that we were able to use a lot of players."

Twelve players saw action for the Bronchos and senior All-American Barbara Jackson played only the first set before retiring to the bench.

Freshman Taylor Bevis led UCO's offensive onslaught, hitting a sizzling .571 with 17 kills and only one error in 28 attempts.  Jordan Spence, Allison Barr and Deborah Ijeoma Njenje added eight kills apiece, with Barr also making four blocks.

Katy Davis showed off her distributing ability once again with 41 assists to go with two service aces and two blocks, while Whitney Gifford had 22 digs to lead the defense.

The Bronchos never trailed in taking the first set, getting two early kills from Bevis in grabbing a quick 7-1 lead.

MSSU scored the opening point of the second set, but it was all UCO after that and the Bronchos closed with an 11-1 run to finish off the 25-9 rout.

The Lions led 3-1 early in the third set, but Njenje had three kills in a 9-1 spurt that put UCO in front 10-4 and the Bronchos went on to close out the match.

UCO is back home again Saturday, hosting conference rival Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m.
