Cold-shooting Bronchos Falter Against SNU

EDMOND (Nov. 28) – Garen Wright had 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for Central Oklahoma as the Bronchos fell to Southern Nazarene 79-74 Saturday night at Hamilton Field House on the second day of the UCO Thanksgiving Classic.

UCO struggled with its long-range shooting all night, finishing just 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc in dropping to 4-2 on the season.

It was the final home game until January for the Bronchos, who open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play next week and play their first seven league games on the road.

"We obviously didn't shoot the ball very well and we gave them too many open looks," said first-year head coach Tom Hankins after the Crimson Storm shot 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from 3-point territory.  "We fought hard and had a chance late in the game, but just couldn't get over the hump."

Wright made 6-of-14 shots with one 3-pointer and was just 2-of-6 from the line in his 15-point outing while also hauling in 15 rebounds --including 11 on the defensive end – and making two steals in 32 minutes off the bench.

Seth Heckart added 12 points, Cornell Neal contributed 10 points, five assists and three steals and Trai Jordan had nine points and nine rebounds.

UCO never led in the second half, but trimmed an eight-point deficit to just two at 68-66 on Josh Holliday's follow shot with 1:45 left to play following a Neal steal.

The Bronchos had a chance to take the lead seconds later following an SNU turnover, but Jordan London's 3-point try from the top of the key was just off the mark.  The Crimson Storm rebounded and scored six unanswered points to put the game away.

UCO had a series of four-point leads in the first half, the final one at 26-22 following a Neal layup at the 8:09 mark.  SNU responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead for good at 32-28 and the Bronchos battled from behind the rest of the game.
