Lions Topple UCO

JOPLIN, Mo. (Dec. 3) – Central Oklahoma fell behind late in the first half and could never quite catch up the rest of the way in dropping an 81-66 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to Missouri Southern here Thursday night.

The game was tied 20-all with 9:23 left in the half, but the Lions surged in front 37-30 by intermission and UCO was forced to battle from behind the rest of the way.

The Bronchos were within four points with less than seven minutes left before MSSU used a 9-0 run to take control en route to handing UCO its second straight loss in the league opener for both teams.

"We didn't play very good defense and let them get too many open looks," said head coach Tom Hankins, whose team fell to 4-3.  "It's a disappointing loss, but we just have to put it behind us and get ready for the next one."

The Lions shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field in the game, including a sizzling 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from 3-point range, and also held a 33-22 rebounding advantage.

Kendahl Amerson led the Bronchos with 17 points, while Josh Holliday added 13 and Jordan London and Cornell Neal 10 apiece.

UCO broke on top 6-2 early on a Neal layup, but the Lions answered with a 14-3 run to take the lead for good at 16-9.  The Bronchos rallied to tie it at 18 on a London 3-pointer and it was deadlocked again at 20 with 9:23 left after a London jumper.

But UCO could never gain the lead and the Lions went on to take a 37-30 lead into the break.

The deficit grew to 12 (49-37) five minutes into the second half before the Bronchos battled back, getting within four at 64-60 on a Trai Jordan layup.  It was still a four-point game at 67-64 following a Holliday trey at the 6:48 mark, but MSSU ripped off nine unanswered points to put the game away.

UCO stays on the road Saturday, moving on to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on conference foe Pittsburg State at 3:30 p.m.
