No. 14 UCO Moves On In MIAA Tourney

EDMOND (Nov. 17) – No. 14-ranked Central Oklahoma had no trouble disposing of Emporia State in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The regular season champion and top-seeded Bronchos recorded their third sweep of the season – and second in five days – over the No. 8 seeded Hornets with a drama-free 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 triumph for their 19th straight home win.

UCO improved to 29-3 on the season and will now host the final two rounds of the tournament.

Friday's semifinal matches have the Bronchos going against No. 15-ranked Washburn at 4 p.m., with No. 13 Central Missouri and No. 10 Nebraska-Kearney to meet at 7 p.m.  The two winners play at 3 p.m. Saturday for the tournament title and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament.

"We didn't play particularly well and it's always dangerous playing a team for the third time, but I thought we did a good job taking care of business," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It should be an exciting weekend with four top-15 teams here and we're looking forward to it."

Allison Barr led the Bronchos with nine kills and a .368 attack percentage, while Taylor Bevis added eight kills and three blocks and Jordan Spence seven kills with five blocks.

Katy Davis handed out 29 assists, Whitney Gifford led the defense once again with 17 digs and Bonnie Vernon chipped in 10 digs and two assisted blocks.

UCO never trailed in the opening set after taking a quick 3-0 lead and got consecutive kills from Spence, Barr and Barbara Jackson in breaking away from an early 5-5 tie in the second.

The Bronchos used a 5-0 run to snap an 11-11 deadlock in the third set and stayed safely in front the rest of the way to finish off their 21st sweep of the season.
