UCO Calms Storm

DURANT, Okla. (Nov. 14) – Cornell Neal and Garen Wright scored 17 points apiece to lead Central Oklahoma to an 81-75 win over Southeastern Oklahoma here Saturday night on the second day of the MIAA/GAC Challenge.

The Bronchos trailed 65-63 with 4:57 left to play before going on a 9-1 run to take the lead for good en route to completing a sweep of the two-day classic after beating Northwestern Oklahoma in overtime Friday night.

"Our bench came up big tonight and we got out of here with a good win," said first-year head coach Tom Hankins, whose bench outscored SOSU 30-12 on the night.  "We played pretty well in stretches and it was a good opening weekend for us."

Neal went 4-of-7 from the field and hit all eight free throw tries in his 17-point outing while adding seven rebounds and five assists.  Wright scored 17 on 6-of-10 shooting from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and a 3-of-3 performance from the line in addition to pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds.

UCO also got 12 points each from Trai Jordan and Jordan London, with London hitting 4-of-5 long-range shots.

The Bronchos trailed 65-63 with five minutes left before taking the lead for good on back-to-back layups by Wright and Neal.

Neal answered a SOSU free throw with a short jumper and London's 3-point bomb at the 1:51 mark gave UCO a 72-66 advantage.  The freshman sharpshooter hit another long-range shot at 0:53 to make it 75-68, but the Savage Storm scored four straight points to pull within 75-72.

The Bronchos secured the win at the line, with Neal hitting six foul shots in the final 41 seconds to keep UCO safely in front.

Central appeared poised for a rout after taking a 30-17 lead with six minutes left in the first half, but the Savage Storm went on a 20-7 run the rest of the way to create a 37-all tie by intermission and it was close all the way in the final 20 minutes until the Bronchos finally took control.

UCO is back in action Tuesday at near-by Oklahoma Christian, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
