Double Overtime Thriller

OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 17) – Free throw troubles nearly proved fatal, but Central Oklahoma finally survived in double overtime over Oklahoma Christian here Tuesday night.

The Bronchos prevailed 73-67 despite making just 8-of-17 foul shots (47.1 percent) in regulation.  UCO made 6-of-8 free throws (75.0 percent) in the two extra sessions.

It was the second overtime win of the young season for the Bronchos of first-year head coach Tom Hankins, who improved to 3-0.

"We're definitely are doing things the hard way," Hankins said.  "It was a struggle most of the night, but I thought our defense we pretty good and we found a way to get it done at the end."

Cornell Neal led UCO with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Kendahl Amerson had 14 points.   Trai Jordan chipped in 10 rebounds and eight points and Garen Wright also pulled down 10 boards to go with seven points.

The game was tied 58-all at the end of regulation and 64-64 following the first OT before Wright broke that deadlock with a short jumper 50 seconds into the second extra session to put the Bronchos on top to stay.

Neal followed one OC free throw with a pair of charity tosses to give UCO a 68-65 lead at the 3:01 mark and the Eagles scored at 2:04 to make it 68-67.

Jordan knocked down one of two foul shots at 1:12 to give the Bronchos a three-point advantage and then rebounded an OC miss at 0:46.  Neal hit a 15-footer with 26 seconds to push the lead to 71-67 and Wright rebounded another Eagle miss at 0:20.

Wright was fouled with 13 seconds left and splashed through both foul shots to arrange the final margin.

UCO trailed 37-29 at halftime and was down 11 (55-44) with 6:58 before outscoring the Eagles 14-3 the rest of the way to force overtime.

Neal had five of those points and the Bronchos finally pulled even at 58 when Jordan London made one of two free throws with 33 seconds left.  Both teams missed potential game-winning 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds.

The Bronchos had a 64-62 lead with 1:38 left in the first OT after a Neal 3-pointer, but OC tied it at 1:04 and neither team scored again until Wright's go-ahead basket early in the second OT.
