Bronchos Drop Nail-biter

EDMOND (Oct. 9) – A relentless second-half attack proved fruitless and Central Oklahoma dropped a tough 1-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos dominated the final 45 minutes after going into halftime facing a 1-0 deficit, but failed to capitalize on several prime scoring opportunities and had an eight-game unbeaten home streak snapped.

The Lopers improved to 4-4-3 on the season and 3-1-1 in league play with their first win in four tries against UCO, which dropped to 6-4-1 and 3-1-1.

"That was a very disappointing loss," head coach Mike Cook said.  "We didn't seem ready to play and were pretty lackadaisical the first 45 minutes.  I thought we came out and played with much more energy and urgency in the second half, but we just couldn't put the ball in the net."

Neither team had any real scoring chances the first 37 minutes before UNK scored the game's lone goal on a breakaway with 7:52 left in the opening half.

The Bronchos came out strong in the second half as Quinn Tookey continued her stout defensive play and Kenzie Sublett controlled things in the middle of the field.

UCO outshot the Lopers 11-2 and had seven corner kicks in the final half, but UNK managed to keep the Bronchos at bay.

Caitlin Moore's shot from 20 yards out went off the top post in the 58th minute and UCO had four great shots at the tying goal in the final minutes.

Paige Matacchiera was just off the mark from 10 yards away at the 3:04 mark, Tookey went wide from close range off a fine Kenna Dyess cross at 1:30, UNK made a great save on Moore's rifle shot from long range at 0:25 and Tookey's rebound shot following that miss was high at 0:21.

The Bronchos are home again Sunday, hosting Fort Hays State at 12 p.m.
