Killion Lifts UCO Past Tigers

EDMOND (Oct. 11) – Katie Killion's goal in the 76th minute snapped a defensive deadlock and lifted Central Oklahoma past Fort Hays State 1-0 at wind-whipped Tom Thompson Field Sunday afternoon.

Goalkeeper Lexie Bates made a brilliant save with 6:30 remaining to keep the Bronchos in front and UCO was able to finish off its fourth shutout in improving to 7-4-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"I thought we competed hard today and found a way to win," head coach Mike Cook said.  "Our defense was really strong and Katie did a good job capitalizing on her scoring chance."

UCO's stingy defense didn't even allow a shot attempt until 26 minutes into the game, but the Bronchos couldn't convert offensively in the opening half despite six corner kicks and a 9-3 shot advantage as Camrie Hurst, Kentia Kokis and Killion all had good scoring chances foiled by FHSU.

The second half was a defensive stalemate between the two clubs until Killion finally broke through for her fifth goal of the season.

Morgan Cherry got the assist with a nice lead pass from just past midfield and Killion finished it off with a touch shot past FHSU's charging goalkeeper from 20 feet out with 14:45 left to play.

The Tigers nearly tied it in the late stages on a breakaway, but Bates stood tall against a one-and-one challenge and smothered a hard shot from close range.

Senior All-American Quinn Tookey once again spearheaded UCO's defensive efforts with plenty of assistance from Hurst, Courtney Cox, Casey Herndon and a host of others.

The Bronchos go on the road for two league matches next week before returning home Oct. 23 to host Missouri Southern.
