UCO Makes It Nine Straight

MARYVILLE, Mo. (Oct. 3) – Streaking Central Oklahoma used a balanced attack to run its winning streak to nine straight with a four-set victory over Northwest Missouri here Saturday afternoon.

Barbara Jackson, Deborah Ijeoma Njenje and Taylor Bevis all had at least 11 kills for the Bronchos, who claimed a 25-23, 25-14, 23-15, 25-20 victory in improving to 15-1 on the season and staying atop the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings at 4-0.

"We got contributions from a lot of players today and came out with another great road win," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team won in three sets at Missouri Western Friday night.  "Deborah really gave us a spark and we played pretty well overall."

Njenje came off the bench to hit a sizzling .522 as the freshman had a season-high 14 kills with just two errors in 23 attacks.  Jackson had a team-high 16 kills to go with 15 digs and two service aces, while Bevis added 11 kills.

UCO also got eight kills and four blocks from Allison Barr, with Katy Davis contributing 48 assists, seven digs and three kills.  Whitney Gifford (14 digs) and Bonnie Vernon (10) also helped defensively.

There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the opening set, with the Bronchos taking the lead for good at 21-20 on a Vernon ace and Jackson ended it with her sixth kill of the set.

UCO took control early in the second set and never let up in seizing a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, but the Bearcats stayed alive with their third-set win.

The Bronchos didn't let NWMSU back in it, though, taking a 3-0 lead in the fourth set as Barr had a kill and solo block and Jackson an ace before cruising the rest of the way.

UCO continues a five-match road swing Tuesday at league rival Pittsburg State.
