Streaking UCO Sweeps Gorillas

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Oct. 6) -- No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma got off to a quick start and went on to sweep Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Pittsburg State for its 10th consecutive win here Tuesday night.

The Bronchos rolled to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-21 victory in improving to 16-1 on the season and staying atop the league standings at 5-0.

"We came out ready to play and did what we needed to do," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It's another good road win and we just need to focused on getting better every time we take the court."

All-American Barbara Jackson paced UCO once again with 14 kills and seven digs as the Bronchos finished with a .324 attack percentage, collecting 46 kills in 108 attacks with just 11 errors.  A trio of freshmen -- Taylor Bevis (11), Jordan Spence (nine) and Deborah Ijeoma Njenje (eight) -- combined for 28 kills, while Katy Davis had 39 assists and 12 digs and Whitney Gifford 21 digs.

UCO hit .462 with 13 kills and one error in 26 attacks in the opening set to seize quick control of the match, getting kills from Spencer, Jackson and Allison Barr in grabbing a 3-0 lead en route to the easy win.

The second set was close early with the Bronchos on top 5-4, but Jackson had two kills and Gifford a service ace during an 8-2 run tht put UCO in command.

PSU battled hard in the third set in trying to extend the match and had a 14-11 lead at one point.  The Bronchos rallied to tie it at 18-all and it was deadlocked again at 20 and 21 before UCO scored the final four points to close it out, getting two kills from Bevis and one from Jackson.

The Bronchos continue their five-match road-swing this weekend, going to Missouri Southern Friday and Southwest Baptist Saturday.
