Streak Stopped

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 24) – No. 10-ranked Central Oklahoma's long winning streak came to a sudden stop here Saturday night.

The Bronchos lost early leads in the first two sets and fell short in a spirited third-set comeback during a 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 setback to No. 14 Washburn in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown that snapped a school-record 16-match winning streak

UCO fell to 22-2 with its first defeat since a four-set loss at Florida Southern on Sept. 11, while the Ichabods improved to the same record.  The Bronchos still lead the conference standings at 10-1, with WU now 10-2.

"We didn't play our best, but obviously Washburn had something to do with that," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We had a chance in the first two sets and weren't able to get it done."

Senior All-American Barbara Jackson led UCO 13 kills, while Deborah Ijeoma Njenje added 10 and Jordan Spence eight.  Katy Davis had 36 assists and Whitney Gifford 31 digs.

The Bronchos had just a .170 attack percentage with 41 kills and 16 errors in 147 attacks for their second-worst hitting match of the season.

UCO broke on top 10-6 in the opening set behind three early kills from Jackson and the lead was three at 17-14 following Njenje's shot down the line.

Washburn came back with four unanswered points to move in front 18-17 and it was still a one-point deficit at 23-22 following a Jackson kill before the Ichabods scored the final two points on a block and attack error.

The Bronchos jumped ahead again in the second set and led 7-3 after Jackson and Barr teamed up for a block, but WU rallied to take the lead at 13-12 and UCO never caught up again.

The Ichabods used a 5-0 scoring spurt to break an early 4-4 tie and Washburn led by as many as  nine (18-9) before the Bronchos rallied with a 9-3 run to get within 21-18.

WU was up 24-21, but Jackson had back-to-back kills to make it 24-23 before the Ichabods got the match-ending kill.

The Bronchos go back on the road for two league matches next week, playing at Central Missouri and Lindenwood.
