Record-setting Win

EMPORIA, Kan. (Oct. 23) – Barbara Jackson had two of her match-high 15 kills in a late rally that enabled No. 10-ranked Central Oklahoma to complete a sweep of Emporia State for a school-record 16th straight win here Friday night.

The Bronchos scored the final three points behind Jackson's finish to pull out a 25-20, 25-15, 25-23 victory, improving to 22-1 on the season and a perfect 10-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  UCO moves on to Topeka, Kan. Saturday to face No. 14 Washburn at 6:30 p.m.

"It was a tough fight in the third set, but we stayed in there and found a way to pull it out," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a good road win for us and now we just have to get ready for another big match tomorrow."

Jackson's 15 kills led a balanced UCO attack and the senior All-American added 13 digs.  Taylor Bevis had eight kills, while Deborah Ijeoma Njenje hit a team-best .462 with seven kills and just one error in 13 attacks.

Allison Barr also had seven kills and Jordan Spence chipped in six kills and three blocks.  The Bronchos also got 41 assists and 13 digs from Katy Davis, 16 digs from Whitney Gifford and 13 digs from Karen Montes.

UCO were in control after winning the first two sets, but the Hornets jumped out to leads of 4-1, 11-6 and 14-9 in the third set in trying to extend the match.

Two Bevis kills and a Bonnie Vernon service ace keyed a 5-1 run that cut the deficit to 15-14 and the Bronchos pulled even for the first time at 19-all on a Njenje kill.

It was tied again at 20 and 21 before ESU scored twice to go up 23-21, but Bevis followed a UCO timeout with a kill and Jackson followed with back-to-back kills to give the Bronchos a 24-23 lead before the Hornets committed a match-ending hitting error.

The first set was tied 8-8 before Bevis had two kills in a 5-1 scoring spurt that put UCO in control and Montes had consecutive aces during a 6-0 run early in the second set that gave the Bronchos a commanding lead.
