UCO Falters Against Lions

Box Score

JOPLIN, Mo. (Jan. 8) –
A late-game scoring drought led to a second straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics loss for Central Oklahoma here Thursday night.

The Bronchos made only one shot in the final 7:30 – that coming at the final buzzer – as the Lions scored 14 unanswered points to steal an 83-78 victory.

UCO, which had a seven-game winning streak stopped in its last outing against Northwest Missouri, fell to 11-4 on the season and 4-2 in the league.

Mahlon Jones led the Bronchos with 17 points, while Philip Brown had 13 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.  Cal Andrews and Seth Heckart chipped in 12 points apiece and Garen Wright had 10.

UCO led 45-39 at halftime after hitting 18-of-28 first-half shots (64.3 percent) and the lead grew to 10 at 66-56 with 11:11 left on a Corbin Byford layup.

The cushion was still 10 (71-61) with 9:18 remaining when Heckart made a 15-foot jumper, with another Heckart bucket at the 7:30 mark giving the Bronchos a 75-69 lead.

But UCO went stone cold after that, missing seven straight field goals and one free throw as MSSU went on a 14-0 run to go ahead 83-75 before Jones hit a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

The Bronchos trailed 14-13 early in the game before a Jacob Richardson layup and Cal Andrews 3-pointer put UCO on top 18-14.

Another Andrews trey pushed the advantage to 10 at 31-21 and the lead peaked at 12 (33-21) after another Andrews bucket before the Lions got within 45-39 by intermission.

The Bronchos return to action Saturday, taking on Southwest Baptist at 3:30 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.
