Hot-shooting Bearcats Topple UCO

Box Score

EDMOND (Jan. 3) –
Northwest Missouri put on a stunning long-range shooting clinic en route to ending Central Oklahoma's seven-game winning streak in emphatic fashion Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bearcats made their first seven 3-point tries of the game, hit five straight to start the second half and didn't miss many in between in handing the Bronchos a 91-70 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback.

NWMSU ended up shooting a sensational 70.8 percent from beyond the arc, draining 17-of-24 attempts.  Zach Schneider led the onslaught, making a school-record nine treys in just 10 tries to score a game-high 29 points.

UCO was efficient offensively in shooting 57.1 percent (24-of-42) from the field, but the Bronchos were hampered by 20 turnovers – which the Bearcats turned into 28 points – and trailed by double digits most of the game.

"We didn't do a very good job guarding their 3-point shooters and when we did they still made the shot," head coach Terry Evans said.  "We never got in a rhythm offensively and just didn't play good enough defense."

UCO fell to 11-3 on the season and 4-1 in the league, while the Bearcats improved to 10-2 and 3-1.

Garen Wright led the Bronchos with 13 points, while Philip Brown made all five field goal tries and both free throw attempts in a 12-point outing.  Seth Heckart and Mahlon Jones added 11 points each.

UCO had a 7-3 lead after a Heckart 3-pointer less than two minutes into the game before Schneider made three straight treys in a 16-4 run that put the Bearcats ahead 19-11.

A long bomb by Wright had the Bronchos within five at 24-19 midway through the half, but Schneider had another 3-pointer in a 7-0 spurt that made it 31-19 at the 8:23 mark.

NWMSU pushed its lead to 14 (45-31) at 1:52 before UCO ended the half with six unanswered points to make it an eight-point game (45-37) at the break.

A three-point play by Jones had the Bronchos within seven at 48-41 early in the second half, but another long-range dagger by Schenider ignited a 17-3 run that made it 65-44 with 13:45 left and UCO got no closer than 17 the rest of the way.

The Bronchos go on the road for two conference games next week, traveling to Missouri Southern Thursday and Southwest Baptist Saturday.
