Bronchos Fall to Washburn

Box Score

EDMOND (Jan. 22) –
Opening- and closing-game shooting slumps were too much for Central Oklahoma to overcome Thursday night at Hamilton Field House as the Bronchos fell to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Washburn 68-60.

UCO made just 2-of-14 shots to start the game in falling into a huge 24-7 hole and then – after rallying to take a 54-51 lead -- hit only 2-of-9 field goals over the final seven minutes in losing for the fifth time in six outings.

The Bronchos shot just 35.6 percent (21-of-59) for the game and made only 9-of-15 free throws (60.0  percent) in falling to 12-7 overall and 5-5 in the league.

"We just didn't play very well," head coach Terry Evans said.  "We got off to a terrible start and then did a great job fighting our way back into the game, but we made too many mistakes at the end."

Garen Wright was the lone player in double figures for UCO, scoring 12 of his game-high 18 points in the second half.  Cal Andrews made three 3-pointers in a nine-point outing, while Philip Brown had seven points and six rebounds.

The early-game struggles put the Bronchos in a 17-point hole (24-7) by the 11:39 mark, though UCO managed to pull within nine at 37-28 by halftime.

It was still an 11-point deficit (45-36) with 15:04 remaining when Mahlon Jones made two free throws to ignite a 13-2 run.

Andrews drilled a pair of 3-pointers during the surge, which ended with back-to-back Wright layups that put the Bronchos on to 49-47 at the 11:24 mark.

Seth Heckart followed a WU dunk with a long trey from the top of the key to make it 52-49 and it was 54-51 with 7:26 left to play after Wright's fast-break layup following a Heckart steal and assist.

But UCO went cold again after that and the Ichabods went on a 12-1 run to move in front 63-55 with 3:32 left to play and the Bronchos couldn't answer back.

Central is back home again Saturday, hosting Emporia State at 3:30 p.m.
