Box Score

EDMOND (Jan. 24) –
Seth Heckart's 3-pointer sparked a 12-0 first-half run that put Central Oklahoma in the lead and the Bronchos went on to dismantle Emporia State 68-50 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Hornets had a 7-4 lead four minutes into the game when Heckart splashed through his long-range rainbow to tie it and UCO made four layups – two by Philip Brown – in zipping to a 16-7 lead by the 10:28 mark.

The Bronchos went on to an 11-point halftime lead, pushed their advantage to 25 early in the second half and coasted in to break a three-game losing streak.

UCO improved to 13-7 on the season and 6-5 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  ESU fell to 9-10 and 2-8.

"We didn't get over to a very good start, but we made some things happen on both ends of the floor during the one early run and came out with a much-needed win," head coach Terry Evans said.  "We did a better job running our offense and hopefully this will give us some confidence moving forward."

The Bronchos shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the field and committed just 12 turnovers.  Ten players scored and Brown led the way with a game-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and a 3-of-3 effort from the line.

Mahlon Jones added 13 points, Trai Jordan was big off the bench with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Heckart finished with nine points, six assists and four rebounds.

UCO never trailed after its early surge to the 16-7 lead, though the Hornets were within four at 26-22 with 4:13 left in the half.

Jacob Strassle scored four points and Cal Andrews hit a late 3-pointer as the Bronchos pushed their advantage to 11 (37-26) by intermission and UCO scored the first eight points of the second half to break the game open.

Jones, Corbin Byford and Darrius Bryson all had layups and Brown an emphatic two-hand slam off a nice Heckart feed during that stretch as the Bronchos extended their margin to 45-26 and the lead peaked at 25 (52-27) on Jordan's layup with 14:19 left to play.

ESU never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.

UCO doesn't play again until going to Pittsburg State next Saturday.
