Box Score

KEARNEY, Neb. (Jan. 17) –
Nebraska-Kearney scored six points in the final 27 seconds to hand Central Oklahoma a stunning 83-80 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Saturday night.

The Bronchos led 80-77 after Mahlon Jones' layup with 43 seconds left, but UNK converted a rare four-point play at 0:27 to take the lead and added two free throws at 0:16 to make it 83-80.

UCO missed two tying 3-point tries in the final 13 seconds as the Lopers held on.

It was the second straight loss and fourth in five outings for the Bronchos, who fell to 12-6 on the season and 5-4 in the conference.

"We played hard, but made a lot of mistakes at the end that hurt us," head coach Terry Evans said.  "It's a tough loss that we just have to put behind us and move on."

UCO used a 10-0 run to surge in front 66-60 midway through the second half and was up 70-63 with 8:45 left after a short Philip Brown jumper.

The Bronchos still had the lead at 73-69 after Cal Andrews made a layup, but two misses and two turnovers fueled a 6-0 run that put UNK on top 75-73 with 2:51 remaining.

Jones drilled a 3-pointer at 2:30 to give UCO a 76-75 lead, Brown followed a Loper bucket with another short jumper to keep the Bronchos in front and Jones drove in for a layup after a UNK miss to make it 80-77 with 43 seconds to play.

But the Lopers were fouled making a 3-pointer at 0:27 and added the free throw to go ahead 81-80 before making two more free throws after a UCO miss to make it 83-80 with 16 seconds remaining.

The Bronchos got off two 3-point attempts in the final 13 seconds left, but both were off the mark.

Jones led UCO with 23 points and four assists, making 10-of-13 shots with a pair of 3-pointers.  Reggie Sloan made three treys in a 15-point outing, while Brown chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Bronchos never led in the opening half, trailed by as many as 10 in the first 20 minutes and were down 45-38 at the break.

Jones scored three layups in a 49-second span to spark a 10-2 run to open the second half that gave UCO its first lead at 48-47 and it was back-and-forth the rest of the way.

UCO returns home next week to continue conference play, taking on Washburn at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
