Tigers Hold Off UCO

Box Score

HAYS, Kan. (Jan. 15) –
A cold spell down the stretch spoiled a spirited Central Oklahoma rally as the Bronchos fell to Fort Hays State 82-72 here Thursday night.

UCO overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to take a 67-66 lead with 5:35 remaining, but four straight misses and four turnovers over the next four minutes resulted in a game-clinching 10-0 run for the Tigers.

It was the third loss in four outings for the Bronchos, who fell to 12-5 on the season and 5-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.  FHSU improved to 10-6 and 4-4.

"We did a great job battling back after being behind the whole game and couldn't keep it up at the end," head coach Terry Evans said.  "We got off to a tough start and just made too many mistakes."

Mahlon Jones led UCO with 16 points, while Colton Byford had 14 points while making 6-of-8 shots.  Philip Brown had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, with Darrius Bryson adding eight points.

The Bronchos fell behind 6-0 just 51 seconds into the game, trailed by as many as 16 in the first half and were down 41-31 at intermission.

It was still a 15-point deficit (47-32) two minutes into the second half before Brown and Bryson scored four points apiece in a 10-0 run that made it 47-42.

The Tigers pushed their lead back to 10 (53-43) before Byford had a 3-pointer and layup in a 7-0 spurt that got UCO within three at 53-50 and the Bronchos finally pulled even at 64-all on Jones' three-point play with 8:09 left.

UCO took its first lead of the game at 67-66 with 5:35 remaining when Jones made a pair of free throws, but FHSU responded with 10 unanswered points as the Bronchos went cold from the field and committed four costly turnovers.

That gave the Tigers a 76-67 lead with 1:02 to play and FHSU went 6-of-6 from the foul line the rest of the way to keep UCO at bay.

The Bronchos stay on the road Saturday, going to Nebraska-Kearney for a 7:30 p.m. conference contest.
