UCO Travels To Emporia State Saturday

Unbeaten Central Oklahoma takes to the road Saturday when the Bronchos travel to Emporia, Kan. to face Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Emporia State.
 
Kickoff is 2 p.m. at 7,000-seat Welch Stadium in the first of nine straight afternoon games for UCO.  
 
The Bronchos are 2-0 for the first time since 2004 and share the league lead at 2-0 with top-rated Northwest Missouri and No. 8 Pittsburg State. The Hornets are 1-1 and 1-1.
 
ESU was picked third and fourth in the two pre-season MIAA polls, while UCO was tabbed 10th and 11th. Conference teams play full 11-game schedules against each other this season.

 

ON THE AIR: All UCO games will be broadcast live on 99.7 Hank FM.


Veteran broadcaster David Garrett calls the action, with former UCO All-American John Fitzgerald adding color commentary.

ABOUT THE SERIES: UCO owns a 9-5-1 lead in a series that started in 1928 with a 23-6 ESU victory.


The Hornets have won the last three meetings, including a 42-14 victory two years ago in Emporia.


LAST YEAR: Emporia State set four MIAA and five Wantland Stadium records in a 54-38 win as the two teams combined for 59 first downs and 1,265 yards, including 884 passing.


The Hornets rolled up 699 total yards and QB Brent Wilson was 38-of-47 passing for 522 yards and seven touchdowns. UCO finished with 566 yards, with WR Marquez Clark racking up 338 all-purpose yards.


LAST WEEK: UCO overcame a 14-0 first-half deficit to stun Missouri Western 26-17 at Wantland Stadium, scoring nine points in the final 17 seconds to complete the comeback.


QB Chas Stallard scored on a three-yard run with 9:44 left to pull the Bronchos even at 17-all and Seth Hiddink hit an 18-yard field goal with 17 seconds left to break the tie. CB Cody Jones capped the win when he scored on a 42-yard interception return on the game's final play.


UCO outgained the Griffons 403-261, including 229-50 in the final period.


NEXT WEEK: The Bronchos return home to face defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Wantland Stadium.
