Scoring Drought Dooms Bronchos

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Feb. 8) – A nine-minute second-half scoring drought during a narrow lead into a lopsided loss for Central Oklahoma here Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos led Pittsburg State 50-49 with 10:01 left to play, but didn't score again until the 1:03 mark and the Gorillas ended the game with a 23-2 run to claim a 72-52 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory.

UCO missed 12 straight shots – nine field goals and three free throws – and committed four turnovers during the lengthy dry spell that saw PSU score 20 unanswered points to pull out its second win in a week over the Bronchos.

It was the fifth straight loss for UCO, which fell to 10-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference. The Gorillas improved to 17-6 and 10-3.

Julia Mason led the Bronchos with 14 points, while Jill Bryan and Britney Morgan had 11 apiece. UCO shot just 29.2 percent (7-of-24) in the second half, missing all eight 3-point tries.

The game was close most of the first half, with the Bronchos getting two 3-pointers from Julia Mason and one from Jill Bryan in a 12-4 run that turned a 10-6 deficit into an 18-14 lead.

UCO's largest lead was five at 36-31 on a Morgan layup with 4:07 left in the half, with the Gorillas scoring the final four points to pull within 36-35 by intermission.

The lead went back-and-forth the first 10 minutes of the second half and the Bronchos were up 50-49 on a short Chelsea Robinson jumper with 10:01 remaining before the shots stopped falling.
