Brown Sparks UCO Past Evangels

Box Score

EDMOND (Dec. 1) –
Philip Brown scored seven of his season-high 18 points during a crucial late-game stretch that gave Central Oklahoma some breathing room and the Bronchos went on to turn back Mid-America Christian 103-96 Monday night at Hamilton Field House.

It was the 250th career win for head coach Terry Evans, who moved to 250-116 in his 13th year at the helm as UCO improved to 7-2 despite committing a season-high 22 turnovers.

"We didn't do a very good job taking care of the ball, but we really executed well offensively," Evans said.  "We're happy with the win and now it's time to get ready for the conference season."

The Bronchos open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Thursday, hosting Lindenwood at 7:30 p.m.

UCO never trailed after the opening minutes, but the Evangels trimmed a 14-point deficit to four in the late stages and outcome was in doubt before Brown took over.

The 6-foot-7 senior converted a three-point play, swished two free throws and made a tough layup in traffic during a 1:10 span as UCO used a 9-2 run to turn a precarious 87-83 lead into a 96-85 cushion with 3:33 remaining.

MACU got no closer than the final seven-point margin the rest of the way as the Bronchos closed out their third straight win.

Brown was 5-of-8 from the field and 8-of-9 from the line in his 18-point outing off the bench while adding seven rebounds and two blocked shots in just 19 minutes of action.

Mahlon Jones led UCO with 23 points, four assists and three steals as he made 8-of-12 shots with three 3-pointers.  Seth Heckart had three treys in scoring 16 points while dishing out a career-high eight assists and making three steals.

The Bronchos also got 14 points from Garen Wright and 11 points and eight rebounds from Trai Jordan.

The game went back-and-forth early and it was tied 18-all with 11:32 left before Reggie Sloan drained a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 run that put UCO on top to stay.  Corbin Byford ended that spurt with a put-back dunk to make it 25-18 and the Bronchos led by as many as 12 before settling for a 54-45 halftime advantage.

Two Wright free throws had UCO's lead at 14 (61-47) early in the second half and it was still a 13-point lead at 76-63 following a Heckart foul shot at 10:29 before the Evangels rallied to get close.

Semar Farris scored 22 of his game-high 29 points in the second half to lead the rally that pulled MACU within four before Brown's late-game heroics stemmed the tide.
