Last-second Shot Stuns Bronchos

Box Score

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Nov. 25) –
Southwestern Oklahoma scored the final five points of the game and handed Central Oklahoma a stunning 70-68 setback here Tuesday night.

The Bronchos -- who led by as many as 12 in the first half -- went ahead 68-65 on Mahlon Jones' 25-foot 3-pointer from the wing with 59 seconds left, but SWOSU tied it with a corner trey 17 seconds later.

Jones missed on a drive to the basket with 16.7 ticks left and the ball went out of bounds off a UCO player to give the Bulldogs possession.

SWOSU called timeout at 0:10 before putting put the ball in Kenyan Borders hands and he swished a contested 14-footer with 1.9 seconds to play.  Jones threw up an off-balance 50-footer that went over the backboard at the buzzer as the Bronchos dropped to 4-2.

"That's a tough loss, but we just didn't play very well in the second half," said head coach Terry Evans.  "We missed some easy shots and didn't make enough plays."

Jones led UCO with 20 points, while Trai Jordan added 12 points and two blocked shots.  Garen Wright chipped in 11 points and Seth Heckart 10.

The Bronchos led 43-39 at halftime, but missed their five shots of the second half in falling behind 45-43.

The Bulldogs built a series of four-point leads and were up 54-50 when UCO scored seven unanswered points to go ahead 57-54 on Cal Andrews' follow shot with 11:10 remaining.

Jordan's steal and left-handed layup helped the Bronchos push their lead to five at 65-60 with 4:59 left, but UCO didn't score again until Jones' last-minute trey.

Heckart made two straight 3-pointers during an early 8-0 run that turned a 15-11 deficit into a 19-15 lead, hitting the first one from the right wing and the second from the left after coming up with a quick steal.

SWOSU came back with five straight points to go ahead 20-19, but the Bronchos responded with a 15-2 spurt to open up a 12-point advantage.

UCO made 5-of-7 shots and 4-of-5 free throws during that stretch while harassing the Bulldogs into missing 11 of 12 field goal attempts.  Jones had a pair of coast-to-coast driving layups and Jordan finished the run with four straight points, including a nifty inside spin-move for a layup.

That gave the Bronchos a 34-22 lead with 6:26 left in the half and it was still a 12-point cushion (38-26) at 4:25 after another driving left-handed layup in traffic by Jones, but SWOSU managed to pull within 43-39 by the break.

UCO returns to action Friday at the Oklahoma Christian Classic in Oklahoma City, taking on Southwestern Christian at 5:30 p.m.
