UCO Gets Past Eagles

Box Score

OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 28) –
Cal Andrews and Mahlon Jones combined for 25 second-half points to spark Central Oklahoma past pesky Southwestern Christian 93-77 Friday night on the first day of the Oklahoma Christian Classic.

It was UCO's second win of the week over the NAIA-member Eagles, but this meeting didn't resemble Monday's 113-74 rout at Hamilton Field House as the Bronchos had to overcome an 11-point first-half deficit.

"We didn't come out ready to play and got off to a terrible start," head coach Terry Evans said.  "We played pretty well for stretches, but weren't nearly as consistent as we need to be."

UCO led by 12 points at halftime and went up 42-28 10 seconds into the second half on Garen Wright's dunk off a Seth Heckart alley-oop, but the Eagles rallied to tie it at 49 with 12:40 left to play.

UCO finally went ahead to stay on Jones' driving layup in traffic, Trai Jordan's blocked shot led to an Andrews layup and Reggie Sloan drained a 3-pointer from the corner after a turnover to complete a 7-0 run that put the Bronchos on top 56-49 at the 11:21 mark.

Another 7-0 spurt finally gave UCO breathing room as Heckart splashed through a trey from the wing, Andrews flushed down a one-handed jam on a fast-break and Jones went coast-to-coast with a layup after a Philip Brown block to make it 77-61 at 6:08.

The Bronchos cruised the rest of the way, improving to 5-2 on the season.

Andrews and Jones both went 6-of-10 from the field in 18-point outings, with Jones scoring 13 points in the final half and Andrews 12.

Jarred Bairstow made 7-of-8 shots in adding 15 points for UCO, while Sloan drilled four 3-pointers in scoring 13 and Wright chipped in 12.

The Bronchos got out to a slow start and made just four of its first 14 shots in falling into a surprising 21-10 hole before Sloan – who transferred to UCO this season after playing the past two years at SCU – swished three 3-pointers in a three-minute span to ignite a 19-0 run.

Sloan's corner trey off a Wright feed gave the Bronchos their first lead at 23-20 with 8:26 left in the half and Bairstow capped the spurt with a follow shot at 4:30 that made it 29-21.

The Eagles finally ended a seven-minute drought and scored the next five points to get within 30-26, but Andrews had five points in a half-ending 10-2 run that gave UCO a 40-28 advantage at the break.

The Bronchos return to the Eagles Nest Saturday to face Southern Nazarene at 5 p.m.
