UCO Finishes Strong

Box Score

EDMOND (Nov. 15) –
Sabetha Young collected a career-high 15 kills in her final home match and Central Oklahoma ended the regular season with a four-set triumph over Pittsburg State Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos earned a 25-15, 26-28, 25-18, 25-16 victory in improving to 28-5 on the season and ending up tied for third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings.  UCO is hopeful of earning an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament when that 64-team field is announced Sunday night.

"We didn't play our best, but it's always good to send your seniors out with a win in your final home match," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "I think the body of work from this season should be enough to get us into the national tournament, but we'll have to wait and see."

Young was one of four seniors playing their final home match and all four played well.  Juliette Smith had eight kills and six blocks, Carissa Ophus 12 digs and Joanna Huckabee four kills.

Barbara Jackson had a match-high 22 kills along with 20 digs and five blocks.  Bonnie Vernon and Allison Barr added six kills apiece, Whitney Gifford had 19 digs and Katy Davis handed out 56 assists.

UCO took control early in winning the first set, getting seven kills against just one error in 12 attacks from Young and five kills from Jackson.

The Bronchos trailed early in the second set before surging in front 23-18 only to see PSU rally with six unanswered points to move in front 24-23.  UCO tied it at 24 and it was deadlocked again at 25 and 26 before the Gorillas finally prevailed to tie the match.

Jackson had six kills and five digs in the third set win as the Bronchos overcame an early deficit and UCO built a big lead early in the fourth set en route to ending the match.
