Vernon Sparks UCO Past Hornets

Box Score

EMPORIA, Kan. (Oct. 4) – Bonnie Vernon had 12 of her career-high 19 kills in the final two sets to spark Central Oklahoma to a four-set win over Emporia State here Saturday night.

The Bronchos ended a two-match Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association losing streak with the 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 25-17 victory, improving to 16-2 on the season and 6-2 in the league.

Vernon was the catalyst, hitting .390 with 19 kills and just three errors in 41 attacks while adding two assisted blocks.  Barbara Jackson had 15 kills, 18 digs and five service aces and Sabetha Young nine kills.

UCO also got five kills and six blocks from Juliette Smith, 24 digs from Whitney Gifford and 11 key digs off the bench from Mikayla Bangasser.

"It was a big win for us, especially coming off a tough loss the night before," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team fell to No. 7-ranked Washburn in four hard-fought sets Friday.  "Bonnie really gave us a spark tonight and we got great contributions from a lot of different players."

The Bronchos jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and never trailed in taking the lead, but ESU returned the favor by grabbing control early in the second set to even the match.

UCO trailed 15-13 in the third set before back-to-back kills by Vernon and Jackson tied it and the Bronchos broke an 18-18 deadlock with seven straight points to end it.

Jackson and Vernon had two kills apiece in that closing spurt, while Smith had a kill and solo block.

The Hornets led 7-4 early in the fourth set, but Vernon had two kills in an 8-2 run that put UCO in front and the Bronchos pulled steadily away in finishing off the match.

UCO returns home Friday to host Lindenwood.
