Seth Heckart
Box Score

BETHANY, Okla. (Nov. 16) –
Southern Nazarene's 3-point accuracy and the late-game loss of Seth Heckart was too much for Central Oklahoma to overcome here Saturday in a 100-89 setback.

The Crimson Storm shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from long range, hitting four straight during one second-half stretch, and outscored the Bronchos 23-14 after Heckart fouled out with 5:10 left to play.

UCO trailed just 77-75 when it lost Heckart, who hit 10-of-14 shots – including 6-of-9 from downtown – in scoring a career-high 28 points while adding six rebounds.

It was the first loss of the season after two opening wins for the Bronchos, who return to action Tuesday night at Oklahoma Christian.

"Our defense wasn't good enough and we gave them too many open shots," head coach Terry Evans said. "We did some good things and it's early, but we just have to play better defense."

Josh Gibbs backed up Heckart's big night with his third consecutive double-double, hitting 11-of-13 free throws in a 24-point outing in addition to pulling down 11 rebounds. Jarrod McDaniel added 14 points and six assists.

Quan Conner and C.J. Smith scored 29 points apiece for SNU, with Conner hitting six 3-pointers and Smith 14-of-17 free throws.

UCO trailed 45-42 at halftime, but opened the second half with a 10-3 run to move in front 52-48 as Heckart had a pair of buckets and a steal that led to Gibbs' fast-break layup.

Heckart knocked down a floater to keep the Bronchos in front by four (54-50) before SNU went on its 4-for-4 run from beyond the arc to go on top 65-61 at the 12:51 mark.

UCO never regained the lead, though two Gibbs free throws at 5:49 tied it. The Crimson Storm broke that deadlock 12 seconds later with a pair of foul shots and SNU went on a 9-2 scoring spurt after Heckart fouled out to up take an 86-77 lead with 3:22 remaining.

The Bronchos got no closer than eight the rest of the way.

UCO led most of the early going, jumping on top 19-12 on Philip Brown's short jumper five minutes in. The lead was still seven at 40-33 following two Jacob Richardson free throws, but the Crimson Storm drilled a pair of treys in a 12-2 run the rest of the way to grab a 45-42 halftime advantage
