Basks Sparks UCO Past Tigers

Jordan Basks
EDMOND (Dec. 7) – Jordan Basks picked up a stunning first-period fall at 149 pounds to spark No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma past Fort Hays State 22-12 Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

It was the dual opener and first-ever Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association match for the Bronchos, who won six of the 10 weights to clip the Tigers.

Basks' win was the biggest, with the junior needing just 2:36 to pin No. 8-ranked Mitchell Means.  Basks got an quick takedown to take the early lead, turned Means for a near-fall and then ended it with 24 seconds left in the opening period.

UCO also got a 10-2 major decision from 141 Casy Rowell, while 157 Cory Dauphin, 165 Chris Watson, 184 Tanner Keck and heavyweight Cody Dauphin all picked up wins.

“We did some good things, especially with what Jordan and Casy were able to do,” head coach David James said.  “Fort Hays has a good team and I knew this would be a tough match, so it was nice to get a couple of bonus wins.

“Some of our guys haven't been on the mat much because of the injuries we've had and it was good to get them back, but we were pretty sloppy in some spots and have got to clean things up.”

FHSU won the opening match at 125 to take a 3-0 lead, but the fourth-ranked Rowell picked up four takedowns in a dominating 10-2 win at the next weight to put the Bronchos on top 4-3.

Trison Graham, a regular 133-pounder filling in a 141, pushed No. 7 C.J. Napier to the distance and nearly scored a last-second takedown in dropping a 3-2 decision as the Tigers went back on top 6-4.

Basks then put UCO ahead to stay with his stunning pin to start a three-match winning streak, with Cory Dauphin pulling out a tough 2-0 win and Watson earning a methodical 5-1 victory in his season debut to up the lead to 16-6.

FHSU's Travis Budke knocked off No. 4 Kelly Henderson 3-2 in the second tiebreaker at 174 before UCO's second-rated Tanner Keck prevailed 6-1 at 184, clinching that win with a third-period near-fall.

The Tigers got their final win at 197 and then Cody Dauphin capped the night with a 9-2 rout at heavyweight, scoring three takedowns.
