WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Feb. 10) -- A slow start proved to be just a temporary obstacle for Central Oklahoma here Wednesday night as the Bronchos rolled past Southwestern Oklahoma 87-74 to tie a school record for consecutive wins.
UCO missed seven of its first eight shots in falling behind 7-2 before hitting three 3-pointers in an 11-0 run to surge in front and the Bronchos built a 40-25 halftime lead en route to winning for the 14th straight time to tie the mark set by the 1963-64 team.
Now 18-4 on the year and 7-0 in the LSC North, UCO can break the record Saturday when it hosts Cameron for an 8 p.m. contest at Hamilton Field House.
“We came out sluggish and missed some shots we normally make, but then we settled down,” UCO coach Terry Evans said. “We did a pretty good job defensively until it got sloppy at the end and did what we came to do.”
Dauntae Williams led the Bronchos with another dominating performance, hitting 10-of-13 shots with four 3-pointers and 4-of-6 free throws in scoring 28 points while adding six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Tyler Phillips made three treys in scoring 15 points, Carl Curry had a season-high 12 points and five rebounds off the bench and Chris Rhymes chipped in 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
UCO's early 7-2 deficit didn't last long when the Bronchos heated up from outside. Williams started the 11-0 spurt with a 25-foot bomb and Shane Carroll answered an SWOSU miss with a trey from the corner to put the Bronchos in front to stay 8-7.
Brent Friday continued the run with a pair of free throws and Phillips ended it with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give UCO a 13-7 lead at the 12:05 mark.
The Bulldogs trailed just 17-16 with 8:16 remaining in the half, but Williams scored five points in a 10-2 run that made it 27-18 and the Bronchos followed a SWOSU bucket with nine unanswered points to open up a big 38-20 lead.
UCO took a 40-25 lead into intermission and extended that to a 21-point bulge (48-27) early in the second half as Williams had a dunk and a driving layup.
The lead stayed near the 20-point mark until SWOSU got within 15 at 74-59 with 4:38 to play, but the Bronchos were never in danger of giving up the lead and the Bulldogs only got within the final 13-point margin with a last-second 3-pointer.
